1.. Remember that everything starts to "count"
beginning freshman year.
2.. Make the highest grades possible in all your
classes- Colleges are looking for students who are
in the top half of their class- aim to be there!
3.. Take challenging coursework to prepare yourself
for the rigor and homework.
4.. Join school activities!! Colleges look for
well-rounded, committed individuals who show
leadership skills.
5.. Volunteer!! Community service is becoming more
important for the scholarship process.
6.. Begin keeping a list of school activities,
honors, awards, employment, volunteer work,
community service, etc. This will help when you
begin to apply for scholarships and writing your
resume.
7.. READ! READ! READ! Studies have shown it is a
great way to increase your test scores on the
SAT/ACT.
Parents
1.. Monitor your child's academic progress. Check
Parent Connect and communicate with your child's
teachers.
2.. Provide encouragement and support.
3.. Encourage your son or daughter to become
involved in a wide variety of activities. Volunteer
and community service are important. Keep a list of
activities and dates.
4.. Help your son or daughter plan meaningful summer
activities. Make plans for your child help with
church activities, develop a hobby, work, volunteer,
etc.
5.. Sign up for Oklahoma's Promise before the end of
your child's sophomore year if your family meets
requirements outlined at

paying for college.
